Introduction to the RCC

The Research Computing Center (RCC) at the University of Chicago offers access to high-end computing, data storage, and visualization resources, along with software, workshops, and expert consulting. Midway is the RCC’s compute ecosystem of high-end computing and storage resources accessible to faculty, researchers, and students at UChicago. The RCC’s Midway HPC ecosystem includes systems like Midway2, Midway3, and MidwayR for sensitive data, as well as the Skyway platform for seamless  integration with commercial cloud services. This hands-on workshop will introduce you to the computational resources and services available at the RCC and will cover topics such as:

  • Overview of RCC programs and services, including grant support, the cluster partnership program (CPP), the consultant partnership program (ConPP), and the Argonne lighthouse affiliate program.

  • Differences between Midway2 and Midway3 compute and storage ecosystems.

  • File transfer methods (SFTP, SCP, Globus, SMB) within Midway systems and external locations, including the secure data enclave (SDE) for sensitive data.

  • Running jobs interactively and with SLURM, and using the Skyway platform for cloud resources.

  • RCC policies on computing resource usage (QoS), storage quotas, service unit (SU), and different allocation brackets.

Objectives:

  • Learners will be able to understand the different computing systems available at RCC

  • Learners will be able to run Linux commands on Midway

  • Learners will be able to run jobs interactively and submit batch jobs in the queue

  • Learners will be able to understand the various policies regarding computing resources usage and storage

  • Learners will be able to transfer files between Midway and their local computer or between Midway and outside systems.

  • Learners will learn about the different programs and services available at RCC (grant support, cluster partnership program, etc.).
