Getting Started Using Commercial Cloud with Skyway

Abstract

This hands-on workshop will introduce you to using cloud computing and popular services available in the cloud for research. With Skyway, RCC users can have access to cloud resources to perform their calculations with minimal effort. We will cover topics such as:

Basic concepts, including: how to get cloud accounts, requesting resources (compute nodes, virtual machines, storage), how to run a job, billing, etc.
Transferring data and codes from on premise systems to your cloud accounts, and vice versa.
Hands-on examples: setting up popular workflows/pipelines, launching interactive sessions, submitting batch jobs, leveraging parallel processing in the cloud, etc.

Objectives:

After the workshop, the learners will be able to

  • understand the basics of cloud computing,
  • be familiar with managing data and codes in and out of cloud storage,
  • be familiar with Skyway, a tool developed by the RCC for running jobs on the cloud.

Please bring your laptop. Familiarity with the HPC environment at the RCC (compute nodes, login nodes, storage, software modules) is required. No prior experience in programming is necessary,
